‘MAMMA MIA!’ at the Fisher Theatre Is Pure Joyful Escapism
There’s something deeply satisfying about being proven wrong in the best possible way. Walking into Mamma Mia! at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with it. A previous production had left me feeling disconnected, underwhelmed, and honestly convinced that maybe this show just wasn’t for me. And then, two songs in, everything flipped.
This current tour doesn’t just revive Mamma Mia!, it reintroduces it with clarity, confidence, and an infectious sense of joy that feels impossible to resist. From the first notes, there’s a noticeable shift in tone: brighter, tighter, more intentional. By the time the opening numbers settle in, you realize this isn’t the same show you remember. It’s better. Sharper. And most importantly, it has heart. What unfolds over the next two and a half hours is a sun-drenched, ABBA-powered escape that feels both nostalgic and freshly alive.
Mamma Mia! is a ABBA fueled fever dream!
Set on a dreamy Greek island, Mamma Mia! centers on Sophie, a young woman preparing for her wedding while quietly trying to solve a lifelong mystery: who is her father? After discovering her mother Donna’s old diary, Sophie secretly invites three men from Donna’s past to the wedding, hoping she’ll finally uncover the truth. What she doesn’t anticipate is the emotional whirlwind that follows.

Donna, who has spent years building an independent life for herself and Sophie, is suddenly forced to confront the past she’s long kept at arm’s length. Old relationships resurface, unresolved feelings bubble up, and the carefully constructed walls she’s built begin to crack. Around them is a lively, ever-moving world of friends, lovers, and wedding chaos, all underscored by ABBA’s iconic catalog. Songs like “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” and “The Winner Takes It All” aren’t just crowd-pleasers; they’re woven directly into the emotional fabric of the story.
At its core, Mamma Mia! is about identity, motherhood, forgiveness, and the unpredictable ways love shows up in our lives.
Set and costumes that feel authentically Greek
Visually, this production understands exactly what it needs to be and never overreaches. The set design leans into a clean, coastal aesthetic that evokes a whitewashed Greek villa perched above the sea. It’s airy, open, and intentionally unfussy, allowing the story and performances to take center stage. The transitions are fluid, with minimal downtime between scenes, keeping the pacing tight and the energy consistently high. Lighting plays a key role in building atmosphere, shifting seamlessly from warm, sunlit tones to more intimate, emotionally grounded moments. It enhances the storytelling without ever distracting from it.

The costumes, meanwhile, are a standout. They strike a perfect balance between relaxed island realism and theatrical flair. Linen fabrics, breezy silhouettes, and soft, natural tones ground the characters in their environment, while the more stylized pieces, especially during musical numbers, add just the right amount of sparkle. And when the show leans into its full ABBA fantasy during the finale, the costume design goes all in with glitter, glam, and unapologetic fun.
It’s the kind of visual payoff that feels earned.
The cast & creative of Mamma Mia! capture the playful energy of this Broadway classic
The success of Mamma Mia! lives and dies by its cast, and this ensemble absolutely delivers. There’s an undeniable sense of cohesion across the company. Every performer feels fully invested, and that collective energy translates directly to the audience. The ensemble numbers are tight, vibrant, and filled with personality, creating a world that feels lived-in rather than staged.
Sophie (Juliette M. Ojeda) is portrayed with a refreshing sincerity. There’s a grounded quality to her performance that keeps the character from feeling overly idealized. Her emotional journey, particularly her desire for connection and understanding, lands with clarity and authenticity.
The three potential fathers (Leland Burnett, Rob Marnell, Victor Wallace) each bring their own distinct flavor to the story, avoiding the trap of becoming one-note archetypes. Their interactions with Donna are layered with humor, nostalgia, and just enough emotional tension to keep things interesting. But the undeniable centerpiece of this production is Donna.

From the moment Jessica Crouch steps on stage, there’s an ease and authority that anchors the entire show. She embodies Donna not as a stereotype of independence, but as a fully realized woman- strong, flawed, guarded, and deeply human.
Vocally, she is exceptional. There’s a richness and control in her voice that elevates every number she touches. “Mamma Mia” is playful and charged with energy, while “Slipping Through My Fingers” offers a quieter, more intimate look at her relationship with Sophie. And then there’s “The Winner Takes It All.” It’s the kind of performance that stops time. The audience leans in. The room is still. And for a few minutes, everything else disappears. It’s raw, precise, and emotionally resonant in a way that lingers long after the final note. What makes her performance so impactful isn’t just vocal strength, it’s emotional honesty. She allows Donna to be vulnerable without ever losing her strength, creating a portrayal that feels both powerful and deeply relatable.
Final verdict on the North American touring production of MAMMA MIA!
This production of Mamma Mia! feels like a rediscovery. It takes a show that can sometimes lean too heavily on nostalgia and infuses it with new life, clarity, and purpose. It’s joyful without being shallow, heartfelt without being overly sentimental, and entertaining in a way that feels genuinely earned.
For anyone who, like me, may have walked away from a previous production feeling underwhelmed, this is your second chance. And it’s worth it.
