‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’ Is Absurd in All The Right Ways
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think we could all use a laugh right about now. The world is bleak, and when I sit down to watch a movie, I don’t always want something incredibly in-depth. Instead, I want to have a popcorn film, where I can turn off my mind and just laugh until I’m blue in the face. I think that is why absurd comedy, such as Scary Movie, is making a comeback, because most people just need a reprieve from the real world and enjoy a moment of levity with everyone else in a movie theater. Which is exactly the point of Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass.
Sony Pictures Classics’ latest film embraces just how silly comedy can be, with a story that is so absurd, all you can do is strap yourself in. Directed and written by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer), along with co-author Ken Marino (Veronica Mars, Death Becomes Her North American Tour), Gail Daughtry asks a simple question, “Who is your celebrity sex pass?” and then completely throws the rule book out the window. This is a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as you never know what ridiculous thing is just around the corner.

Gail’s on a mission(ary)
Gail Daughtry’s (Zoey Deutch) life is picture perfect. She has a job that makes her happy, a best friend who is there for her through thick and thin, and a fiancé that always puts her first. Well….maybe not that last one. Gail definitely thought she had the perfect life partner, that is, until he sleeps with Jennifer Aniston and claims the celebrity sex pass as his excuse for grace.
Which Gail is willing to do trying her best to do, but we know in the face of a betrayal such as cheating, it’s hard to do. However, bestie Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) has a plan. If fiancé Tom (Michael Cassidy) can use a celebrity sex pass, then so can she, which pushes the besties into a scheme that gets wilder the longer the film goes on. The plan is simple: find Jon Hamm and have one epic fling, and then she can return to the safety and security of her life.
However, things are never quite what they seem, and the hunt for Jon Hamm’s Jon Ham provides Gail and Otto with plenty of twists and turns. Perhaps what it leaves Gail with, more than anything, is a moment to reflect on just how perfect her life truly is. Does she want the perfect life on the surface, or a life that truly makes her happy?
Gail Daughtry is a cinematic moment to breathe
It feels like the world of cinema has been stuck in this endless desire to make films of immense depth and weight. Not that there is anything wrong with movies of substance, but when the world already feels so overwhelming and heavy, the last thing I want is a film that just reinforces the vibe. Sometimes I want to flick on a television show or a film in which I can switch off my brain and just enjoy.
We need laughter, people! Are you executives at all the major studios listening? Collectively, we need films that let us laugh until we cry and walk away feeling joy. That’s one thing I love: the return of franchises like Scary Movie, or even new films that just capture how fun movies can be, like Masters of the Universe. And now we live in a world where Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is providing similar joy.
This may be shocking to some who are reading this, but a film about a girl searching for Jon Hamm to have sex with him isn’t trying to be anything more than what it is. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is an absolutely ridiculous film that makes you roll your eyes multiple times, although with a gigantic smile on your face as you do so.
It’s purely a popcorn flick that brings you back to simpler times, both in real life and in cinema. It harkens back to late-90s and early-00s comedy films made simply to laugh and have a good time. Did American Pie set out to win any awards? Probably not. But did it live on in the minds of the general population because of its hilarity? Absolutely.
I didn’t go into the film expecting my life to be changed in a significant, earth-shattering way. Instead, I went in with an open mind and a strong desire to be entertained, and Gail Daughtry easily achieved that. The chemistry amongst the cast is intoxicating, and one of the main reasons to see this. They’re having fun, and you can tell in every scene.
This is a much-needed reprieve from the arthouse-style films that can be such a slog to get through. There’s a time and a place for everything, but now is the moment for Hollywood to breathe. It’s time to take a step back and remember that something doesn’t have to be award-winning to be good. Sometimes, turning on a movie purely for enjoyment and a laugh is just fine.
Final thoughts on this Sony Classic Pictures film
Will Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass win awards? No, probably not. However, I’m not sure anyone who made this film will be surprised by that sentiment. However, the fact that it’s something I can sit back, switch my mind off, and just enjoy is an absolute win in my book. There are pieces of this film where you’ll laugh until you cry, which is exactly what I need at this point in my life. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass will entertain and will most definitely be a film that people talk about years down the road, simply because it brought fun back to the cinema in a way that was desperately needed.
