So what does it take to make a collector doll feel special? Sure, you can give it an elaborate costume, pile on accessories, create lavish packaging, or simply lean into a character’s most recognizable traits. That is the basis of what separates a standard doll from a collector doll; however, the best collector dolls manage to do all of those things while also keeping the character at the heart of the product. Collectors are seeking dolls or other memorabilia that capture their favorite character in all their essence, without the character getting lost in translation. Monster High Ghouls Rule Lagoona Blue does exactly that, in that iconic style the brand is known for.
Created as part of Mattel’s Skullector line and released as a 2026 San Diego Comic-Con exclusive, this version of Lagoona Blue takes the beloved sea monster and gives her an appropriately glamorous Halloween makeover. The concept of this Skullector doll is deliciously simple: Lagoona is the Halloween party-planning committee chair, and she’s throwing a masquerade at the Eerie Aquarium. From there, Mattel has seemingly taken every opportunity to turn the ocean into high fashion, and boy, do they do so with such ease.
What does it result in? I’m glad you asked, as the Skullector Ghouls Rule Lagoona Blue feels less like a standard Monster High doll dressed for Halloween and more like a fully realized collector’s interpretation of what a Monster High masquerade queen should look like. And frankly, she makes quite the splash.

A Lagoona Blue Unlike Any Other
When it comes to a franchise that has been around for as long as Monster High, one might expect that the character design might not vary that much from one series of dolls to another. If you’ve seen one version of Lagoona Blue, then you’ve seen them all, right? I remember being a child and receiving that statement from the adults in my life, as new iterations of dolls rolled out every year around the holiday. However, from the moment I opened the Skullector Ghouls Rule Lagoona Blue doll, I knew that it wasn’t your typical doll from Monster High. Sure, they’ve made plenty of Lagoona Blue dolls in their time, but there hasn’t ever been one like this one.
While I have never personally collected Monster High dolls, as they came onto the scene long after my sister and I were playing with dolls and action figures, I had knowledge of and a specific vision for what this look would be like. Take Barbie but make it gothic, spooky, and stylish. Also, because my mother owned and operated a day care, I was familiar with the brand, specifically the Lagoona Blue doll, as some of the children seemed drawn to her. So perhaps one of this Skullector Ghouls Rule doll’s greatest strengths is that it doesn’t simply recycle Lagoona’s familiar aesthetic.
Lagoona Blue has always been one of Monster High’s most visually distinctive characters. Her aquatic heritage naturally lends itself to fins, scales, sea creatures, and shades of blue, but that could easily become repetitive. This aesthetic consistently pays homage to the cinematic world of Creature from the Black Lagoon, but when you look at all the products that spawn from that, they are exactly the same. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when you’re seeking a collector’s doll, you want something new, something different. Mattel Creations’ Ghouls Rule line of Monster High dolls takes those familiar elements from our traditional lagoon monsters and pushes them into something much more dramatic.
Lagoona Blue stands approximately 10.5 inches tall with 11 points of articulation, giving her a substantial presence appropriate for a collector release. She’s floating, as if suspended by water, in the middle of an impressive collector’s box as well, providing an even more substantial feel to the Monster High collector doll. However, it’s probably not the height of the box or doll, or ever the articulation, that you’re going to notice first, because what’s going to catch your eye is the outfit.
The pleated dress is an inspired choice that fits the party-themed series and is truly the centerpiece of the doll. The exaggerated, rippling fins used as sleeves immediately call back to the underwater look iconic to this monster, without making Lagoona look like she’s wearing a literal fish costume. Might seem like an odd distinction to make, but personally I think it’s important, as the design is aquatic yet fashion-forward.
That balance is something Monster High has historically done exceptionally well, and this doll understands the assignment. The dress feels like something that could plausibly belong at an extravagant masquerade while still looking as though it could only have been designed for the daughter of a sea monster.
Fashion with a fintastic point of view
From a zoomed-out perspective, Lagoona’s masquerade dress is already incredibly impressive; however, when you start to examine the individual elements, this Monster High doll becomes even more alive.
The iridescent thigh-high slouchy boots particularly stand out, complementing the iconic dress spectacularly. Their shimmering finish gives them the appearance of something pulled straight from the depths of the ocean, while the silhouette keeps them firmly rooted in fashion-doll territory.
Then there are the mesh stockings you almost don’t even notice, sticking out just above the boots. It might be considered a small, even unimportant detail to some, but collector dolls live and die by small details. The socks add texture and help break up the larger areas of the outfit, while also giving the boots an extra layer of visual interest. Mattel has clearly designed the outfit to reward closer inspection rather than simply looking impressive from across the room.
And then we get to the skeletal eels. Yes, you read that right: skeletal eels are part of the decorative details that elevate this Lagoona Blue from a standard doll to something extraordinary. They form both a headband and a sculptural belt, and this might be one of the most delightfully Monster High details on the entire doll. It’s weird, spooky, aquatic, and above all, stylish. In other words, it’s exactly what you want from Monster High.
Rather than simply adding generic Halloween decorations, the designers have incorporated the monster element directly into the fashion. That’s not just giving into a gimmick; that’s creating a clever design.
The fin-inspired earrings continue the aquatic motif, while the heels take things even further with skeleton anglerfish designs. Again, nothing feels randomly attached. Nearly every element ties back to the underwater masquerade concept, which collectors will just eat up.
Maybe she’s born with it? Maybe it’s Mattel
Lagoona’s face is another area where Mattel has carefully crafted an impressive design. Her long blonde hair features aqua streaks, creating a wonderful contrast between the warmer blonde and the cooler aquatic tones. It’s a look that feels glamorous without losing the character’s identity.
The iridescent makeup is equally appropriate. There’s something almost magical about giving an underwater character makeup that appears to change depending on how the light hits it. It reinforces the fantasy that Lagoona has literally emerged from an enchanted underwater world for one spectacular evening.
But the real showstopper of the Skullector Ghouls Rule Lagoona Blue may be the masquerade mask. Designed to look like an anglerfish (which matches the heels of her boots) and finished with a dangling pearl, the mask is exactly the sort of accessory that elevates this from a standard Halloween Lagoona to a Lagoona attending the most exclusive masquerade under the sea.
Emphasis on exclusive. It’s theatrical without being excessive, which can definitely be a difficult line to walk. Collector dolls can sometimes fall into the trap of adding more and more details simply because they can. Here, the details generally feel purposeful. The mask tells you what kind of event you’re attending. The pearl adds elegance. The angler-fish motif reinforces the character’s aquatic heritage. It all works without feeling over-the-top or gaudy, which is exactly what Mattel was aiming for.
A Monster High doll made for displaying
When evaluating how well a collector doll works, you have to consider how well it works outside the box, and Lagoona has a major advantage in that field. The doll is intended to look like a centerpiece rather than simply another figure on a shelf. The accompanying display elements help establish the aquatic setting, with blue tendrils rising from the wavy water base, while the overall presentation reinforces the idea that you’re looking at a character attending an extravagant event.
This is particularly important for a doll like Lagoona because her design is so dependent on atmosphere. Put her on a plain shelf, and she’s still gorgeous. Give her the full presentation, however, and she becomes an event.
The packaging also plays an important role in that experience. Collector packaging isn’t merely a container anymore; it’s part of the product. As I stated earlier in the review, the Lagoona Blue box adds impressive substance to the doll’s overall presentation, and that sentiment is important. The window-box presentation allows the doll to function as a display piece even before she’s removed, while the aquatic monster aesthetic ties the package directly to the character and theme. For collectors who keep their dolls boxed, like me, that’s a major advantage.

Monster High has never been about making monsters genuinely frightening. The Skullector Ghouls Rule Lagoona understands that philosophy beautifully. From the fin-like appearance of her dress to the skeletal-eel and anglerfish details, pearls, iridescent materials, aquatic makeup, and ocean-inspired silhouettes, everything works together to communicate the beauty within the “scary.”
Nothing feels like an afterthought. Everything on and in the box works together to tell Lagoona’s story and reflect her visual identity. This isn’t just a doll; it is a piece of memorabilia with a story, proving that dolls can have style and substance. There are countless ways Mattel could have approached a Halloween-themed Lagoona. They could have gone darker. They could have leaned harder into traditional sea-monster imagery. They could have simply put her in a black dress and called it a day.
Instead, they created something that feels like an underwater fashion fantasy. That’s what ultimately makes this release so successful. It doesn’t feel like Mattel asking, “How many spooky details can we put on Lagoona?” Instead, it feels like they’re asking, “What would Lagoona wear if she were hosting the most fabulous Halloween masquerade under the sea?”
For longtime Monster High fans, there’s plenty here to appreciate. For Lagoona collectors, the doll offers a version of the character that feels genuinely different from her previous collector releases. And for anyone who appreciates beautifully designed fashion dolls, there’s an impressive amount of craftsmanship and visual storytelling packed into this release.
The Skullector name has come to represent some of Monster High’s more ambitious collector creations, and Ghouls Rule Lagoona Blue certainly earns her place among them.
